Full-year loss for Speedy
Written by Helen Wright - 17 May 2016
UK rental company Speedy hire has reported a £57.6 million (€74 million) pre-tax loss for fiscal 2015, while revenues dropped 12% year-on-year to £329 million (€421 million).
The company reported exceptional costs for the year ended March 2016 of £59.9 million (€76.7 million), including acquisitions and restructuring costs.
The international division has been restructured including the closure of operations in Egypt and Qatar and the sale of the business in Oman in the current financial year.
The group also withdrew from the UAE spot hire business in the previous year, but said its remaining oil and gas activities in the region were currently operating profitably.
In the UK and Ireland, where the majority of Speedy’s revenues are generated, the company said it had seen a partial recover in the final quarter. Nevertheless, revenues fell 12% year-on-year in this division to £309 million (€396 million).
Total capital expenditure during the year amounted to £69 million (€88.4 million), compared to £87.7 million (€112 million) for the 12 months to the end of March, 2015. Speedy said £57.8 million (€74 million) of its cap-ex spend was related to rental equipment.
Chief executive Russel Down said, “We have restructured the business, cut overheads to more closely align them with revenues, enhanced the management information generated from our systems and improved our cash performance. We are now starting to see an improvement in our culture and greater efficiencies throughout our operations.
“The business is starting to respond positively to the actions we are undertaking. With a renewed focus on sales, tighter overhead control and better management information with which to manage return on capital we are creating a solid platform for the future.”
And Jan Åstrand, executive chairman, added, “We are beginning to see the business responding to the actions being undertaken by the new management team with an improvement in our culture of accountability, customer service, and in driving greater efficiencies throughout our operations.”

Stuart Power – Immingham bridge construction |
Stuart Group provided a power solution to Costain to allow a road access beneath a live railway line in Immingham as part of the A180/A160 infrastructure works. The project involved sliding a 3800 tonne concrete structure approximately 25 metres into position beneath the railway. The massive culvert-like structure was built in an excavation above a lower concrete slab which would form the foundation on which the bridge would slide.
Costain had a 76 hour rail possession from Network Rail for the works and it was very important that all contingencies were accounted for so that there would be no unplanned interruption to rail services.
Specified by specialist contractor Freyssinet , Stuart Group was required to provide 2 no. 400kVA generators (one on standby) which would provide power for the Freyssinet jacks and the associated equipment such as bentonite mixers and ancillary items.
Stuart Group was able to supply and install the generators and all of the distribution equipment to help make the job a success. After electrical certification the whole system was tested, moving the structure 500 mm approximately, in readiness for the 76 hour possession starting on Christmas Eve.
Stuart Group provided on-site standby fitters over a critical 20 hour period as a back-up measure although there was no interruption in the power supply from the primary generator.
The bridge slide was completed ahead of schedule by Costain and Freyssinet and Stuart Group is very pleased to have been able to make a positive contribution to this spectacular project.

Stuart Wells – View of a well point system for a new build house |
The client is building an off the shelf “flat pack” house that will be complete in 6 weeks from breaking ground.
The site investigation identified an issue with the ground water level that would prevent the construction of the basement in the dry.
A disposable well point system was therefore designed and installed by Stuart Wells around 3 sides of the basement with one side open to allow machine access to excavate down to the foundation level.
This allowed the overlying sands and gravels to the chalk to excavated in the dry.
The well points were installed over a 3 day period and commissioned ;the following day excavation took place and the blinding base layer was poured the following morning allowing the contractor to gain 2 days of programme and ensuring the client will be able to enjoy Christmas in their new house.

Stuart Wells - Sizewell Power Station Safety Award For SWS Operative |
Stuart Wells are currently undertaking dewatering works at Sizewell Power Station.
The abstracted waters discharge to an engineered lined settlement lagoon, which has had buoyancy aids placed on poles around the lagoon perimeter.
Dave Manton the SWS dewatering operative on site highlighted via the site safety suggestion box that should somebody be unfortunate to fall in and nobody noticed they would not be able to “reach the floatation ring on the poles” and as the lagoon is lined with a plastic membrane they would not be able to escape.
Dave suggested that one of the rings was placed into the lagoon and that a simple ladder made from car tyres be placed in the lagoon so in the event someone should fall in and nobody noticed they would have a flotation device that they could reach and had a means of escaping from the lagoon via the car tyre ladder.
When asked by the main contractor SHE advisor why he had thought of this Dave reply was that he had instigated this escape route on previous contracts but this was the first time he had received a safety award.
Congratualtion to Dave for this simple life saving suggestion.

Stuart Wells - Surf Snowdonia Opens Today |
Surf Snowdonia opens today at the former aluminium works in North Wales.
This leisure facility - the largest man made surfing lake in the world now allows surfers to catch a manmade wave every 60 seconds .
Stuart Wells involvement was to dewater the central location to install the apparatus that makes the waves over a distance of 300 metres.
The water once abstracted at 70,000 litres per hour over a nine month period was subsequently treated on site under a NRW mobile treatment licence allowing the treated waters to be discharge to the River Conwy a SSSI site ; with no environmental concerns over the duration of the works.
Good luck to all you “hanging ten” at Surf Snowdonia!!!

Stuart Group - Project Penguin |
Stuart Group Ltd, a national power generating and specialist pumping company have successfully completed another major overseas contract. The project was to build a 4.5MW Containerised Diesel Engine Power Station in the Falkland Islands, a British Antarctic territory approximately 8,000 miles from Norfolk.
The Design Engineers set to work, producing detailed drawings including interfacing with a 30 year old system, a major conundrum. The devised strategy entailed the supply and modification of three 1700kVA FG Wilson Generators using Perkins engines. To give a scale of capacity, one of these, approximately the size of a double decker bus, would provide enough electricity to power around 800 houses. The unpredictable marine climate in the Falkland Islands, frequent strong gales, snow storms and sun all in a day, facilitated the need for essential adaptations to the containers. These included fitting heaters to the engines to keep the ambient temperature in the engines above 5° Celsius and the application of a specialised thick film paint system, appropriate for the salty marine environment. Special measures were taken for fuel management to avoid any adverse impact on the sensitive environment of the Island.
In order to protect the containers from the elements whilst in transit they were wrapped in industrial cling film, a major feat!
Our Skilled Engineers set to work and from receipt of the components in Attleborough, delivery of completed generators to Southampton Port was just three weeks. The generators are now in their final resting place, accompanied temporarily by two Stuart Group Installation and Commissioning Engineers. Stuart Group would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of their team throughout this challenging venture.
Stuart Group’s manufacturing facility is based in Attleborough, Norfolk and employs 65 people from the local area. They also have two Service Centres in the Midlands and Humberside.

Stuart Pumps - Recent export contract to Germany |
In an competitive market place where start up costs can increase with the need for new pumps, Stuart Pumps were able to offer a viable alternative through our used range. Sold to Germany, 2 used SPP Autoprime XH150 units with Caterpillar diesel engines along with 3 used Sulzer Oil Bingham bareshaft pumps. The XH150’s have been put to use on the sites fire suppression system as pictured. The Sulzer pumps are to be used on another application on a site which has been re-energized and would have been left unused and decay over time. Another example of putting to use pumps which would have normally been scrapped as waste.
